A quinceañera is one of the biggest nights in a family's life. Not just for the birthday girl — for abuela, for the padrinos, for cousins who flew in. The music, the MC, the way the night flows — that's what people talk about for years. And yet I've watched families spend months planning every detail of a quinceañera and then book the DJ in five minutes from some random listing online.
I've done quinceañeras all over Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Long Island for 25+ years. Use this checklist before you hire anyone. It'll save you from the most common and most expensive mistakes.
BEFORE YOU EVEN CALL A DJ
In NYC, good bilingual DJs fill up their Saturdays fast — especially April through October. I regularly hear from families who waited too long and lost the date they wanted. Have your date, venue, and rough guest count ready before you start calling anyone. If you're planning 6–12 months out, you're in good shape. Less than that, start moving.
HEADS UP
A quinceañera is a completely different production than a birthday party. The vals, cambio de zapatos, última muñeca, baile sorpresa, court of honor introductions — this is a specific timeline with specific traditions that take real experience to run smoothly. "I've done parties before" is not the same thing. Ask how many quinceañeras specifically.
THE FULL CHECKLIST: QUESTIONS TO ASK EVERY DJ
Experience & Background
- How many quinceañeras have you done in the New York City area?
- Will the same DJ and MC I meet be the ones at my event — or will you send someone else?
- Can you share video clips or photos from previous quinceañeras you've done?
- Do you have references from past quinceañera clients I can contact?
- Are you familiar with all quinceañera traditions — vals, cambio de zapatos, última muñeca, baile sorpresa, court of honor introductions?
Bilingual & Language
- Is the MC fluent in Spanish — not just a few phrases, but fully conversational?
- Will all announcements and formalities be done in both English and Spanish?
- Can the MC adjust language based on which parts of the crowd are Spanish-dominant vs. English-dominant?
DJ vs. MC — Are They the Same Person?
- Is the DJ a separate person from the MC, or does one person do both?
- If one person is doing both, how do they handle mic announcements without interrupting the music?
- (Preferred answer: Dedicated DJ + dedicated MC as a team)
Music & Planning
- How do we share our music wishes and must-play/do-not-play lists with you?
- Do you have all the music for the vals and baile sorpresa, or do we need to provide it?
- How many planning meetings or consultations are included before the event?
- When is the final music list and timeline due?
- Can you coordinate timing with our choreographer for the baile sorpresa?
Equipment & Setup
- What kind of sound system do you use, and is it appropriate for a venue of our size?
- Do you have wireless microphones for the quince, court of honor, and speakers?
- What lighting is included in your package?
- What add-ons are available — photo booth, CO2 cannons, cold sparks, dancing robots, dancing on clouds?
- Do you have backup equipment in case something fails?
- What time do you arrive to set up, and how long does setup take?
Contract, Insurance & Logistics
- Do you provide a written contract — and what does it cover?
- What is the deposit amount and payment schedule?
- Are you fully insured? Can you provide a certificate of insurance to our venue?
- What happens if you get sick or have an emergency on the day of the event?
- Will you coordinate with our venue, photographer, and videographer?
- What is your overtime rate if the party runs longer than expected?
RED FLAGS TO WATCH FOR
- No contract. Walk away. Period. Any professional vendor gives you a written agreement before you hand over a deposit.
- They won't tell you who's actually showing up. This happens more than you'd think — a company books the date and sends whoever is free. Ask directly: "Will you personally be at my event?" Get it in writing.
- They've only done "a few" quinceañeras. General party experience is not quinceañera experience. The traditions are specific, the timeline is tight, and there's no room to figure it out on the job.
- Their "Spanish" is Google Translate. Ask them to speak Spanish to you right now on the phone. You'll know in 30 seconds if it's real.
- No answer to "what's your backup plan." Equipment breaks. People get sick. A professional has already thought this through and can tell you exactly what happens.
- Asking for full payment upfront. Standard is 25–50% deposit to hold the date, balance closer to the event. Anyone asking for everything upfront is a risk.
